After Rodrigo Duterte won the 2016 presidential election in the Philippines, he decided to follow through on his promise to eradicate their drug problem. Since his announcement the extrajudicial killings of hundreds of street children, petty criminals and drug users has been carried out by a vigilante squad called Davao Death
Squad. Duterte has supported a shoot-to-kill policy and has openly stated that the Mexican and Chinese cartels are involved in the Philippines drug trade which has inspired racially motivated killings.
