About:
In 2002 a three-week long riot was held in the West Indian state of Gujarat. The riots were targeting the Muslim population and resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus.
Overall 2,500 people were non-fatally injured and 223 are reported missing. Looting, rape and the burning of children occurred during the riots.
The head of the Gujarat state Narenda Modi, who is now India’s prime minister, has been accused of condoning the violence and rejected claims that the state government did not do enough to prevent the riots.
