From 1958 to 1962 the communist party of China, led by Chairman Mao Zedong, led an economic and social campaign to rapidly transform the country. This period of time is referred to as “The Great Leap Forward”. Within this period a famine took place that lasted for three years. Over the course of this famine an estimated 36 million people died.
